The I Can Build That radio show is dedicated to the memory of our son,
Thomas Noah Smith
May 31, 1993 - Jan 29, 2011

On January 29 Thomas was called to Heaven by means of Cardiomegaly (enlarged heart). If you have a young person in your life that is active in sports please have your physician do a heart check on them. According to Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons 1-2 teenagers will die from an undiagnosed heart condition every week with no warning signs. We want to stop this sudden death of our children and grandchildren.

Check here to verfity the license of a residential builder/contractor in the state of https://www2.dleg.state.mi.us/colaLicVerify/ ___________________________________________________________________________ SIGNS THAT YOU ARE HIRING A CONTRACTOR / HANDYMAN WHO IS NOT LICENSED: 1 – Building Permits – when your contractor says you don’t need a permit or suggests that you get it yourself because homeowners get discounted price – this is a problem because the only person who can get a building permit is the homeowner or a licensed builder and the price is the same for both. 2 – No written contract. 3 – They cannot produce a wallet size card with their license # & valid date. 4 – Request for payment in cash and cash up front. 5 – They tell the homeowner that they have “left over” material from another job so they will be able to save you money. Most builders or remodelers do not over buy for their jobs – so when you hear this the material you could be getting could be sub-standard, stolen or salvaged from someplace else. 6 – Watch out for Roofing schemes – the unlicensed person will knock at your door and say that they recently did a job for a neighbor and they have has left over material to fix a problem on your roof – This is when you ask for the neighbor’s name and additional references, plus their builders license and insurance. The homeowner is also responsible to make sure that any work performed in this state will pass code – A licensed builder will have a code book – unlicensed will not. This mean you could have to pay twice re-do a project if it does not meet code.
An unlicensed builder will not be able to obtain Workmen’s comp insurance for his crew, this means that You, the homeowner, will bear the responsibility if that person or anyone on his crew are hurt or injured on your property. The homeowner could have to pay for the lost wages, the accident costs, and if the injury is serious enough the homeowner could pay the medical bills for the rest of the injured person’s life.
